Decades before such baseball greats as Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson, and Barry Bonds attracted throngs of fans to stadiums nationwide, talented black ballplayers--barred from the major leagues--were drawing crowds throughout North America. Between 1920 and 1947, the Negro Leagues produced some of history's most riveting baseball, thanks to athletic superstars like Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell, singular showmen like Satchel Paige, and thousands of other great players with less familiar names. This calendar honors the Negro Leagues' players and teams in rare photographs, biographical sketches, stats, key dates, and memorable quotations.
